What Is The Old Farmer’s Almanac?

In case you’ve never heard of the Old Farmer’s Almanac, or don’t know what an almanac is, we thought we’d give you a quick explanation. An almanac is “a book published every year that includes information for that year such as important days, times of the sun rising and going down, or changes in the moon”. It often also contains long-range general weather predictions and has been a useful tool for farmers for hundreds of years.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac is one of the most popular and well-known publications and uses meteorological and astronomical data and a “secret” formula to help create its predictions for the weather. Founded by Robert B. Thomas, it is also the oldest almanac in the USA and has been in use since 1792. The Old Farmer’s Almanac also claims to have an average of 80% accuracy in its predictions, and while it doesn’t get it right every time, many farmers and agriculturists have found it helpful for planting and growing their crops.

However, we’ve found that the Old Farmer’s Almanac is also great to help plan a ski trip, and doesn’t need to only be used for your home’s garden.

If you don’t have a copy of the Old Farmer’s Almanac, you might not have seen what’s coming for the ski season. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

In general, the long-range forecast for BC is shaping up to be great for skiers and snowboarders. For Southern British Columbia (where Big White Ski Resort is located) it’s looking like a cooler start to the season. Mid-November and most of December will be the coolest times for the ski season and will have a slightly above normal than average precipitation for the year (Old Farmer’s Almanac Canadian Edition 2023 p 218).

Weather Forecast Predictions For The Most Popular Months To Visit Big White Ski Resort

The snowiest part of the season is predicted to be in late November and in early and late December. There will also be another snowy period in late January (p 218). In November, it’s predicted to be about 1℃ below average with above-average precipitation of 190mm. December is also looking cooler than in past years, with higher precipitation than usual. January will be average in temperature and precipitation compared to previous years. February is predicted to be a bit warmer (1℃ above average) with less precipitation than usual. Note that these are average temperature and precipitation predictions across Southern British Columbia. Big White Ski Resort is generally much cooler during the winter season.

If you’re looking for lots of snow and cooler temperatures for your trip, December will be the coldest month. It will also have a slightly above average snowfall than in previous years. But if you want our champagne powder snow at a warmer time, January is also predicted to be a great month for skiing.

Of course, Big White Ski Resort is an excellent place to visit throughout most of the ski season. We get an average of 7.5 metres of champagne powder snow annually!
